A stay at the Jack Huff’s Motor Lodge is a journey back in time to another era of travel, before the days of generic, big chain hotels. It has character. Jack Huff’s is now my go to place in Gatlinburg.

I recently upgraded to the MSR PocketRocket Plus, and it is so near-perfect that it may be the last stove I ever purchase.
When my trusty Nemo Meta 2P finally ‘gave up the ghost’, I went in search of a replacement shelter. I decided on the Zpacks Triplex, and the Triplex has proven to be the perfect shelter for my needs.
I’m often asked what my favorite gear item is. For overall versatility and most uses trip-after-trip, my favorite piece of gear is my Patagonia Houdini Air Wind Jacket.
I kicked off the 2022 hiking season in late March with my fourth backpacking trip to iconic Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We did a 3-day, 2-night, 22-mile hike in the Elmont area of the park.
For my ‘big’ western trip of 2021 we returned to the Wind River Range in Wyoming, where the views are glorious and permits aren’t required.
The Log Cabin Motel is a throwback to an earlier age, the time of the ‘motor court’ era. For any trip to the Wind River Range the Log Cabin Motel is Pinedale’s ‘must stay’ lodging.
A canoe trip in Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has occupied a spot near the top of my ‘Bucket List’ for a long time. The opportunity finally presented itself in June 2021 when I was invited on a 6-day Boundary Waters trip.
There is some unwritten rule about Blogs that your first post must be titled ‘First Post’. I don’t know if that’s true, but I didn’t want to take any chances getting on the wrong side of blog ‘karma’… so, ‘First Post’ it is!
For more than a decade I’ve been blessed to share the trails with two of the greatest hiking partners a backpacker could ever dream of having. This is the story of my two Labs – Jaden and Bailey.
In September 2020 we decided to take a quick ‘Coronavirus Escape’ family trip to the magnificent West Baden Springs Hotel. I wanted to share our experience – (spoiler alert… it was quite nice!)
In late May 2020, after a couple months of Coronavirus quarantine ‘lock-down’ we decided to make a jail break! The Cranberry Wilderness in West Virginia was our destination.
